The Risks of Facial Recognition: Higher False Positives in Dark-Skinned Individuals

Experts and civil rights organizations have long warned against blind trust in facial recognition when it comes to identifying suspects. Misidentifications can then lead to innocent people being arrested. And due to technical challenges caused by increased skin pigmentation and a mismatch in the data material used to train such systems, the risk of such “false positives” is significantly higher in dark-skinned people.
