The Risks and Benefits of Carbon Plate Running Shoes

Jakarta

The trend for running shoes with carbon plate features is in the spotlight, after being recently associated with the risk of bone stress injury. This type of shoe is not only popular with professional athletes, but also recreational runners.

It’s not without reason that carbon plate shoes are so popular. For professional athletes, it is believed that its sophisticated features can boost performance, while for recreational runners, its sleek design is also effective in boosting ‘prestige’.

Using carbon plates that provide a spring effect when hitting the ground, these shoes do allow the wearer to run faster so that they reach the finish line faster too. Even so, this type of carbon shoe can’t be worn by everyone because of the risk of injury, you know.

Recently, a sports medicine specialist Dr. Andi Kurniawan, SpKO, is one of the doctors who often finds patients with this problem. He explained that he had his third case of bone stress injury in the last four to six weeks in a recreational sportsman. He also continued that everything had to do with carbon shoes.

“The case of bone stress injury to 3 runners in the last 4 to 6 weeks. Everything is related to carbon shoes,” explained Dr. Andi via his personal Instagram Story.

Really, how comfortable is it to wear carbon shoes?

Ronald Manullang, a marathon runner who actively uses carbon shoes, admits to using carbon shoes for sports. According to him, these shoes feel light and have a pushing force sensation. However, carbon shoes are not soft, so they can cause instability when running.

“So, carbon shoes are usually lighter. Carbon shoes have thrust as well. And carbon is like a hard plate, so it’s not really soft. Because of its softness, it’s actually an unstable shoe and floats like that. So ground contact with our runway, we are forced to go up again faster,” said Ronald in conversation with detikcom, Friday (01/09/2023).

Regarding the risk of injury that has recently been associated with carbon shoes, Ronald has also experienced it. He suffered an incomplete stress fracture and fracture while participating in the New York Marathon.

“So in my preparation for the New York Marathon, I had two shoes and in almost all of my training I used carbon shoes. In the end, during the marathon, I fractured from the 8th to the 42nd kilometer,” he said.

Even so, Ronald believes that carbon shoes are not the main problem causing the injury he is experiencing. Carbon shoes only exacerbate the situation when used unwisely and excessively.

“Most people, including me, also make the same mistake, I use all one type of shoe for all exercises,” said Ronald.
