The Rising Trend of “Tropical Nights” in the South of France

The phenomenon of “tropical nights” has already affected the South of France since mid-June. The Var and the Alpes-Maritimes are particularly affected by the increase in temperatures.

Like many, you must have felt the heat in recent weeks, even after the sun has set. In these conditions, it is difficult to find sleep.

This increase noted on the thermometers, these are the “tropical nights”, a data recorded between 6 p.m. the day before and until noon the next day by meteorologists. Initially, this phenomenon was rare, since it was specific to only certain places on the globe, but now it has settled in France, and especially on the Côte d’Azur since 2015.

THE FOLLOW-UP AFTER THIS AD

A peak between June 27 and 28

To be counted as such, a “tropical night” must exceed 20 degrees on average. This year, the first took place from June 12, and since then they have been linked, with a peak of 24.5 between June 27 and 28.

This fact affects the whole of France, but the cities located on the shores of the Mediterranean are more impacted than the others, mainly in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. The reason is simple, without the wind which cools the sea, it warms up continuously during the summer period, as explained by France 3 Nice.

This summer will be worse than the last

Thus, the Mediterranean has been measured at times over 30 degrees in 2022, but when it exceeds 25, it takes time to cool down, even by one or two degrees.

While last year, this phenomenon reached a record since Météo-France recorded more than 68 consecutive nights at more than 20 degrees from June 30. This bar should therefore be crossed, with an earlier start in 2023, especially since we are currently observing an increase of 5 degrees compared to the average calculated over the previous three decades.

As with climate change, it is to be expected that the torrid nights will continue, or even gain ground. The situation should indeed worsen with an average of 73 “tropical nights” per year expected in Nice from 2041 according to experts. The cycle could thus stretch from the beginning of June to October in the next 10 to 15 years.
