The Rise of ‘Dirty Hair’ in 2024 Hair Trends

Hair trends are changing at a furious pace. Like now. The catwalk has spoken, once again, by sending one glamorous model after another down the runway wearing luxurious garments – and “dirty hair”.

– This is a cool look that points to a somewhat effortless and redefined relationship with beauty, says Aicha Amalie Hissaoui, creative director at Nikita Hair and Sayso.

– Futuristic

It’s been wet weather in hair trendland for quite some time now – from glittering straight-out-of-the-sea looks inspired by the mermaidcore that grew out of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to big comeback for the classic, rough wet look.

The edgy but at the same time playful hair styling that suits all hair types has been embraced by a number of major fashion houses. Recently, Miu Miu took it a step further – filling the catwalk for its SS24 show with models with ‘dirty hair’.

– The new version of this aesthetic is clean, futuristic and dramatic, tells hairdresser Vernon Francois Vogue Scandinavia.

Gets “coregasm” in training

Aicha Amalie Hissaoui is completely on board with the notes.

– One can have many thoughts about this trend. At least it makes it easier if you don’t have time to wash your hair or struggle with an oily scalp – being able to transform your hair into a trendy look is practical and smart in these hectic times, she says.

Even she thinks the look is cool.

– It is reminiscent of the grunge style from the 90s, while also having a futuristic touch.

Just go for it, both when it comes to a tousled, random styling of the weld and a bold, shiny look.

Hissaoui also highlights the mermaidcore aesthetic as a source of inspiration for the hair trend, but believes that one thing separates them:

– This look is not as “wet” and should have a more “hangover” feel. It is the opposite of the glamor that we see trending now, because this style is effortlessly put to the forefront.

Hissaoui has faith in the trend going forward – because it turns out time and time again that what we see on the catwalk will be the current trends for the time to come.

That’s why this happens with your clothes

She reminds us that the trends that rage are often a response to what is moving in society.

– And not washing your hair, and making a hairstyle out of it, is a power statement, and you can think that it is a way of taking back control when there is much in the world that you cannot change.
