The Rise in Preference for Low-Priced Electric Vehicles Over Luxury Cars in the Domestic Market

[앵커]

As the growth of the domestic electric vehicle market slows, the preference for low-priced electric vehicles over luxury cars is increasing.

With the lack of electric vehicle infrastructure, there appears to be a huge burden on prices.

Hyundai Motor Group poured the technology it has accumulated over the years and launched its top-of-the-line electric vehicle, the EV9, in June.

Before launch, it was predicted to be a box office hit, with more than 10,000 pre-orders signed.

However, over the past four months, sales have amounted to just over 4,000 units (4,156).

Onerous prices are cited as the biggest reason for poor sales.

When adding options, the price of the car exceeds 85 million won, so it seems that there were many cancellations of reservations as not a penny of electric vehicle subsidies were received.

On the other hand, although the Ray electric car model launched last month has not yet achieved performance, the number of pre-orders exceeded this year’s sales target of 6,000 units.

It is classified as a light car, so it has tax benefits, and if you receive a subsidy, you can buy a car for less than 20 million won.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which rank first and second in domestic sales of imported cars, only accounted for about 4% of electric vehicle sales in the third quarter.

Considering that about 9% of all domestically sold vehicles during the same period were electric vehicles, this means that the more expensive an electric vehicle is, the less it is sold.

Automakers need to sell a lot of expensive cars to make a profit, but the current market situation does not support these expectations.

It appears that it will not be easy to expand the market for luxury electric vehicles until electric vehicle infrastructure becomes more dense and autonomous driving technology matures.
