The Rise and Fall of the Teatro Variedades in Buenos Aires

What is the history of the Teatro Variedades?

The Teatro Variedades was a cultural space that arose as a project of Ana Irazusta de Santamarina, at the beginning of the 20th century. She wanted to found a place that would remain in a position to attract the best actors in the country.

Finally, after hiring the German architect Karl Nordmannthe work progressed quickly and, in a few years, this emblematic building stood out on the block.

It happens that Nordmann had experience in similar works, since he is remembered as the author of the Colosseum Theateras well as the president of the Central Society of Architects in 1910.

Anyway. The Teatro Variedades opened its doors on May 11, 1909 on Calle Lima 615, a few meters from the Constitution Square Stationto premiere his first show: “Let’s get divorced”, del dramaturgo inglés Victorien Sardou.

Why was this place so special?

One of the most striking characteristics of the Teatro Variedades, which it only shared with the Colon Theater that was built on 9 de Julio avenue, is that both are “exents”.

This means that, once inside, the spectators could observe how the facilities were divided into three partsas it happened in the ancient greek theaters:

Due to the wide spaces, the Teatro Variedades was available to organize national and international workslike the Spanish zarzuelas.

But, within the framework of a remodeling plan, the magic of this site came to an end, after the demolition of the structure that occurred in 1961.
