The Rise and Fall of Karate in the USSR: The Unforeseen Consequences

There is a serious problem in society.

In the USSR there was not only sex, but also karate. This sport fell into disgrace for an unexpected reason. By the end of the 70s, millions of Soviet citizens were fond of Japanese martial art, but already in the 80s everything changed dramatically.

Sections of karate grew on the territory of the state like mushrooms after rain. At the same time, crime also increased. The authorities quickly saw this relationship. It turned out that young people use the acquired combat skills not at all for self-defense. A firm decision was made: to ban the martial art and severely punish all those who practice it.

For example, the well-known coach Alexei Shturmin, who stood at the very origins of the development of this sport in the country, continued to work and received eight years in prison for this. And such an example, alas, is not the only one. The strict ban was in effect for seven years and did not apply only to KGB officers.
