The Riga municipality will be looking for a metrobus line construction project expert in procurement

On the website of the Procurement Supervision Office, the Procurement Department of the Central Administration of Riga Municipality has published a preliminary information notice on the planned procurement – the construction of an independent public transport line and related bicycle infrastructure on the section of Dzelzavas Street from Jorģa Zemitān Bridge to Jugla Street, expertise and inspection of construction projects.

LETA has already reported that the mayor of Riga Vilnis Ķirsis (V) revealed that the government will most likely not grant funding for the implementation of this project and that the previously planned approximately 40 million euros will be transferred to the “Rail Baltica” project at the suggestion of the Ministry of Transport.

As ķirsis previously told LETA agency, he hopes that the project of establishing a metrobus line in Riga will be able to be implemented from the funds of the next European Union (EU) planning period for 2028-2030.

On the other hand, if it fails to attract EU money for the metrobus line project, the municipality will seek funding on its own.

As the municipality explained, there are no plans to abandon this project for the time being, so all planned works will continue, including a procurement for the construction project expertise, so that in the event that the project is implemented, the necessary works would have been carried out to fit into the planned work deadlines.

The construction of the Metrobus line in Riga, on Dzelzavas Street, was planned to start this year. According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the metrobus line was estimated at around 40 million euros.

Metrobus is an independent bus or trolleybus line separated from road traffic, it is also called a high-speed bus or trolleybus. It aims to provide a service comparable to a high-speed tram at significantly lower implementation costs.

The project was conceived as a part of the greening reform of the transport system of the Riga metropolis included in the plan of the European Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, the aim of which is to promote a change in habits by introducing the restructuring of traffic flows.
