The RFET launches the campaign “Safe Sport Tennis”

04/03/2021

Coinciding with World Tennis Day, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) has launched the Safe Sport Tennis campaign with the aim of claiming this sport as a safe practice in the current situation of health crisis caused by the pandemic of the COVID-19.

The individual practice outdoors, the social distance and the lack of physical contact that characterize tennis, make it one of the safest sports to avoid the contagion and spread of the coronavirus.

For this reason, both the RFET and different Spanish tennis groups have claimed in recent months that tennis is outside the activity restrictions imposed by the authorities, and that the clubs can operate following an adequate sanitary protocol.

Increase in practitioners

The perception of tennis as a safe sport is permeating society and some studies are beginning to indicate a significant increase in practicing throughout the national territory.

A survey carried out by the Teaching and Research area of the RFET among 600 Spanish technicians indicates that 45% of tennis schools in our country have seen their number of students increase, the majority between 20% and 10% .

The rental of tennis courts has also increased between 20% and 30% compared to before the pandemic, according to data collected in the periods in which the clubs were not closed due to activity restrictions.

Other external studies confirm this trend, such as the one carried out in La Rioja where the increase has been 30% in the number of students in its schools.

Activity program

The campaign promoted by the RFET will be developed throughout this year 2021 under the hashtag #TennisDeporteSeguro with a program of actions and initiatives throughout the national territory.

The captains of the Spanish Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup teams, Sergi Bruguera and Anabel Medina, have participated in the promotional video of the campaign together with Toni Nadal.

The initiative aims to involve all tennis sectors and support clubs, schools and competition organizers to overcome the serious economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

To this end, one of the first actions of the campaign will be a virtual meeting with representatives of clubs from all over Spain, to analyze the situation caused by the pandemic and provide possible solutions. The colloquium can be followed live on a special program on the RFETV channel on YouTube.

A campaign of everyone

Throughout 2021, different videos will be published on social networks with personal testimonies from tennis professionals and amateurs, as well as tutorials for responsible tennis practice.

Renowned professionals from different fields will also participate in the campaign with short video clips with advice on health, nutrition, physical preparation, psychology or the choice of materials.

The RFET has distributed a COVID-19 Prevention Guide to clubs throughout Spain with recommendations for responsible tennis practice, as well as informative material. Also dress the Championships of Spain and other competitions with protest canvases.
