The plant is celebrating 50 years
Successfully completed the rehabilitation of PEOPLE (pumped storage hydropower plant) “Belmeken”. The plant celebrates its 50th anniversary with completely renewed turbine equipment, new actuators for ball valves and completely renewed control systems.
“We are in a place that combines in a unique way the natural beauty and endowments of Bulgaria with engineering achievements,” said the Prime Minister Academician Nikolay Denkov, who attended the official ceremony. He recalled that thanks to the “Belmeken” PAVEC and the “Chaira” PAVEC, Bulgaria is one of the leading engineering examples of how natural resources could be used for the benefit of energy. Academician Denkov emphasized that scientific research, innovation and new technologies have led to the fact that it is easier to create energy than to store it and use it when we need it. “Precisely these facilities – pumped storage plants, have proven to be leading in terms of efficiency, capacity, flexibility, as long as you have the natural resources and the engineers who could build, develop and use them properly,” noted the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Academician Denkov pointed out that he and the Minister of Energy have the task of building even more ambitious projects in other places where Bulgaria has such opportunities.
Energy Minister Rumen Radev specially congratulated the veterans present for the enormous work done over the years. “I am very glad that the rehabilitation of this cascade with the last hydro unit has been completed. The rehabilitation of the Momina Klisura HPP was completed last year. I hope for a long-term, accident-free and safe job”, noted Minister Radev.
“The modernization of the plant is part of the ambitious investment and repair program of NEK EAD, which in the past year has reached record values for the company,” said the executive director of NEK, Eng. Martin Georgiev.
The scope of the rehabilitation of PAVETS “Belmeken” includes design, manufacture, supply, installation, technical supervision, adjustment, testing and commissioning of equipment: hydraulic cylinders for ball valves of the turbines and pumps, turbine equipment, which includes new turbine regulators, nozzles and deflectors. New excitation systems, generator circuit breakers and control and monitoring systems for the entire plant with new operator stations. The value of the rehabilitation of PAVETS Belmeken is in the amount of 9,919,372.55 euros.
After the ceremony at Belmeken PAVEC, Prime Minister Denkov and Minister Radev visited the engine room of Chaira PAVEC, where they inspected the start of the actual rehabilitation activities of Hydrounit 2 with the implementation of an innovative engineering solution by NEK and the consortium that is the contractor of the rehabilitation. The deadline for the completion of the rehabilitation of Hydrounit 2 is until the end of this year, when water samples must be taken, and then put into operation.
