The Red Devils’ Setback: Erik ten Hag’s Troubles at Manchester United

The Red Devils have suffered a setback under Ten Hag who is lucky to still have a job after a miserable start to the season.

Old Trafford was once the most intimidating stadium for opposing teams in English football. Sir Alex Ferguson turned Manchester United into a winning machine during his glorious 27-year reign, creating several world-class teams through a combination of promoting the brightest academy talent and shrewd business in the transfer market.

Ferguson also ruled the dressing room with an iron fist, and demanded the highest standards from each of his players. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all proven to be unfit successors. Erik ten Hag is now destined to suffer the same fate.

Ferguson lost only 34 home games in the Premier League out of 405 in charge: a record that was not equaled by the five coaches who replaced him in 196 games. Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 win at home to their arch-rivals on Sunday (29/1), and the only surprise late in the game was not being able to score at least two or three more goals.

Manchester United started the match quite well, but the differences between the two teams became increasingly clear as the match progressed, and Ten Hag was completely outplayed by Pep Guardiola in terms of tactics. The result confirmed the Red Devils’ worst start to a top-flight season since 1986/97, leaving them 11 points behind leaders Tottenham after just 10 games.

Ten Hag reportedly still has the support of United’s board of directors, but their patience will soon run out. There is nothing positive to take from the team’s performance which might indicate significant changes are coming.

Yes, the uncertainty surrounding the Glazer family’s planned sale of the club has been an unwelcome distraction. Now it appears they will stay put, at least for the time being, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his company INEOS set to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the club with the aim of completing a staged takeover.

But that’s not a good enough excuse for how far United have fallen under Ten Hag. It’s clear that the Dutchman isn’t the right man for the job, and he can only blame himself for the position he can’t recover from now.
