Water is the basis of all living things. Although water covers more than 70% of our planet, only 3.5% of it is potable water. It is this resource that may become a “scarce commodity” in some regions within the next 30 years, as a result of which peace may be threatened.
The German statistics company “Statista” states that global “water stress” is calculated by taking into account the proportion of water used in industry, agriculture or households in relation to available water. In 2022, more than 2.4 billion people lived in places exposed to high water stress, that is, places with a high risk of drinking water shortages.
Currently, it is impossible to determine exactly how many people will live in “water stressed” areas in 2050, because there are many unknown factors – the global population, the economic situation and what political developments will be. This is why scientists develop different scenarios instead of trying to project exact data. One thing is certain – the demand for drinking water will steadily increase, and it will become a deficit in several regions of the world, because there are already places that consume more drinking water than is available.
