Most of the classic cars found in barns these days are conventional vehicles built between the 1950s and 1970s. But sometimes among them you come across truly rare cars. This 1971 Dodge Challenger is one of them.
The Challenger was quite popular in 1970, when Dodge sold almost 77,000 units of the model. However, sales dropped to just 27,377 examples in 1971, when high insurance rates for high-performance vehicles kept many enthusiasts from buying a muscle car.
Equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 engine and three-speed manual transmission, this yellow Challenger is one of only ten built in 1971, according to the owner.
Dodge offered customers three transmissions for the Challenger that year. Among them are the TorqueFlite automatic transmission and four- or three-speed manual transmissions. The machine was by far the most popular, accounting for over 70% of total sales. The four-speed transmission was installed in approximately 24% of Challengers ordered that year, and the three-speed manual was available in fewer than 1,000 examples.
This muscle car spent 40 years in a barn. Its mileage is only 30,912 km. The coupe is covered with a thick layer of dirt. The guys at WD Detailing did some real magic cleaning this car up to a shine. The Bahama yellow paint looks incredible considering it’s 52 years old. The same goes for the white vinyl top. But significant damage is visible on the racks.
The great news is that the seats look almost like new and there are no cracks in the dash. On the other hand, the rust has left huge holes under the front and rear seats. There wasn’t even any living space left to install the driver’s seat after cleaning. Oh!
