The Puck Struggles to Find the Goal: Eisbären Regensburg’s Defeat against Dresdner Eislöwen

The puck doesn’t really want to go into the goal – that could be the conclusion of the second division ice hockey team Eisbären Regensburg after their 1:4 (0:2/0:1/1:1) home defeat against the Dresdner Eislöwen. On the fourth matchday of the new DEL 2 season, the Upper Palatinate team recorded a significant increase in shots on goal compared to the Saxons (43:28), but the more efficient team was the guests, who consequently took the points home with them. Corey Trivino scored the Regensburg goal to make it 1:3 (58th). Johan Porsberger (4th and 20th minutes), Dani Bindels (31st) and Simon Karlsson scored twice for Dresden (58th). In the table, this meant that the EBR remained in 14th and last place (three points), while the Eislöwen moved up to second place (nine points). The Domstadt team continues with the difficult away game against the DEL relegated Bietigheim Steelers on Friday, September 29th, from 7:30 p.m. Head coach Max Kaltenhauser’s team will play their next home game on the following Sunday, October 1st, against the reigning DEL 2 champions Ravensburg Towerstars. The game in the Donau-Arena starts at 5 p.m. (detailed preliminary report to follow).

Follow-up report

EBR attacker Kevin Slezak returned to the squad for the Dresden home game after recovering from an injury – but the two defenders André Bühler and Sandro Mayr were still injured. Contingent striker Andrew Yogan was still suspended, his offensive colleagues Niklas Zeilbeck and Lukas Heger were not in the squad, nor was defender Petr Heider. Tom McCollum started in goal, Jonas Neffin was his backup.

The guests didn’t let the journey of around 350 kilometers bother you and dominated the initial phase. After just four minutes, Johan Porsberger, who was excellently cleared by David Rundqvist, made it 1-0 for Dresden. The Eisbären found it difficult to get into the game, but had warmed up by the final phase of the first third: Janick Schwendener in the Eislöwen goal, however, was in top form and destroyed all of the Upper Palatinate’s chances. This was followed by a bitter goal for the Domstadt team: With only two seconds left on the clock, Rundqvist and Porsberger repeated their feat and made it 2-0 for the Saxons (20th minute) – just as the polar bears had taken over the scepter.

Even after the first break, Regensburg appeared more alert and had a few chances, but were never compelling enough in front of Schwendener. After an unpunished foul on a polar bear, guest attacker Dani Bindels suddenly appeared in front of Tom McCollum in the EBR goal and completed his strong solo to make it 3-0 for Dresden (31st). Once again no luck for the home team, who managed to create a significant increase in chances in the middle section, but were unable to get the puck into the opponent’s goal. The Ice Lions’ pinprick counterattacks usually posed more danger than the Upper Palatinate’s efforts.

Decision in double minority

A similar picture emerged in the final third: Regensburg repeatedly pressed and established themselves in the guests’ third for a long time, but a goal would not be scored. Corey Trivino then broke the spell, making it 1:3 after 52 minutes. From the Eisbären’s point of view, the final offensive should now follow – but first Schwendener was there for a few shots, then the EBR weakened themselves with two penalties. When they were twice outnumbered, Simon Karlsson made the final decision in Dresden’s favor with a powerful shot (58 .).

In the DEL-2 table, the Eisbären remained in 14th and last place with three points, which they had previously slipped into without any action of their own (the EBR were free to play on Sunday). Dresden, however, underlined its ambitions with the victory and climbed to second place with nine points. Meanwhile, the tasks for the Upper Palatinate team are not getting any easier: On Friday they travel to the DEL relegated Bietigheim Steelers (starts at 7:30 p.m.), followed on Sunday by the difficult home game against the reigning DEL 2 champions Ravensburg Towerstars from 5 p.m Danube Arena.
