In eight international exhibitions and an extensive program of educational events, the artists and curators of the Biennale will invite visitors to see the essence of isolation in as many different ways as possible and to re-learn to read the information provided by the image.

“In the last two years, life in isolation has become our new reality. On the other hand, in addition to the pandemic, it is also facilitated by the rapid development of technology, as the state of isolation allows a person to break away from everything and everywhere, creating a circle of friends. and imaginary images in a self-created environment. What does the state of isolation do to us, or is it on the contrary? ” Inga Brūvere, the director of the Riga Photography Biennale and one of the curators of the exhibition, explains the topicality of the topic.

“Meanwhile, with the development of technology, photography as an art medium has entered a new phase, and the understanding of photography as an image has changed.

The central exhibition of the Biennale “Screen Age III: Still Life” will continue the cycle of exhibitions started in 2018 on the impact of technology on the development of modern man and society. The group’s exhibition will be attended by 11 artists from Latvia, the Nordic countries, Europe and South Africa and will take place in the exhibition hall “Riga Art Space” from April 22 to June 12.

In April, exhibitions will also be opened in the Intro Hall of the Riga Art Space and the Smilga Cultural Space. In May and June, the Latvian Museum of Photography, the gallery “Look!” Will open its doors to the visitors of the biennial. and “ISSP Gallery”, as well as another exhibition will be opened in the “Riga Art Space” Intro Hall.

One of the most visible events of the Biennale is the so-called intervention in the urban environment or an exhibition that takes place at public transport stops in Riga. Within the framework of the RSE 2022, the artist Kristīne Krauze will encourage the residents and guests of the city of Sluck to rethink their literacy and study the impact of the digital environment at 10 stops between 6 and 19 June.

According to Boca, the educational program that complements the exhibition will seek to analyze the nature of isolation and look for ways to overcome it in order to create a more inclusive society. Extensive discussions and talks on the topics covered and meetings with the exhibition artists of the Biennale are expected. Artist Līga Spunde and curator Agnese Zviedre will organize special workshops for children and young people, in which, by creating the world of their individual screens, they will create the still life of their time. In cooperation with the Latvian Autism Association, the workshops have been adapted and will be available to children with autism spectrum disorders.

The international conference of the Riga Photography Biennale 2022 will take place on April 30 in the “Riga Art Space” for the audience of representatives of the photographic art environment. Expanding on the main theme of the Biennale’s program – isolation, European photography experts will look at the phenomenon of photobooks in the 21st century and the state of research in Eastern Europe.

Throughout the 2022 Riga Photography Biennale, it will be possible to purchase a special edition of the program at the venues of exhibitions and events – a collection of articles by international authors, which will thematically evaluate the issues discussed at the Biennale’s events.
