The Profeco exhibits ham brands with less meat than promised

Ham with soy or turkey, but with pork, has a lower meat content and does not comply with the Standard and labeling, were part of the irregularities detected by the Federal Consumer Prosecutor (Prophecy).

In a study by the National Laboratory for Consumer Protection 44 brands of ham were analyzed extrafino, fine, preferential, commercial and economic, reason why some type of non-compliance was detected in 11 products.

For example, they are out of the norm: Parma Campestre, 250g leg, which claims to be “fine”, but since it contains starch, it should be “preferred”.

“Some brands incorporate non-meat ingredients whose objective is to replace part of the meat with a protein and functional contribution (soy), while there are other ingredients such as starches or potato, corn or pea starches; as well as carrageenan, which it is used to increase the water holding capacity, “he explained.

Squares and Virginia Bulk Turkey fail to meet fat-free protein percentage, because they have the “preferred” classification.

Parma Sabori, Ham Turkey Turkey 250 grams, which has a “reduced sodium” legend, does not meet the 25% decrease in sodium; while San Rafael, real ham of 300 grams, contains starch that does not detail.

The brands that do not have accurate data on the labels are: Bafar, turkey ham 400 grams, and Duby, cooked turkey ham 500 grams, which have 4.7% and 4.6% less product, respectively, so both brands do not comply. with the content they advertise.

Galy, cooked pork and turkey ham in bulk, contains 51.5% pork, instead of the 55% protein which is the minimum percentage to contain. Parma, York ham 200g, does not indicate the “commercial” classification on the label.

The Profeco assured that the brand should not use the name “ham” Sparta Cooked, turkey ham and pork of one kilogram, since it contains chicken that does not declare in the list of ingredients, said manufacturer was required and showed a change in the formulation and new product label.

Duby, in presentation of 500 grams, is called “cooked turkey ham”, but the meat it uses is more than just turkey drumstick, that is, it does not meet the Official Mexican Standard-158-SCFI-2003 Ham-Denomination and commercial classification, physicochemical, microbiological, organoleptic specifications, commercial information and test methods.

In the case of Lala Plenía, the percentage of added soy protein is not indicated on the label, so Profeco notified the manufacturer, who added the percentage of soy it contains to the label.

Profeco suggested that consumers “bear in mind that, depending on the quality grade, other ingredients are also used, in addition to cheaper meat raw materials.”
