Currently, a new edition of the cult comedy is in the USA “The Prince of Bel-Air”, which is supposed to throw a modern, unadorned look at the realities for black Americans – “Bel-Air”. Comedy Central is now bringing the original with Will Smith into the program again for the cold December in the expiring Corona year 2020.
Starting with the first season, the cult series runs from December 7th, Monday to Friday at 5.30 p.m. in double episodes.
“The Prince of Bel-Air” is one of the most successful US sitcoms of the 1990s, which was and is extremely popular in Germany. The series was the career springboard for Will Smith for six seasons from 1990, who then became a sought-after Hollywood actor and began a career as a rapper at the same time.
The focus of the series is the 17-year-old Will Smith (Smith), called Fresh Prince, who grew up in humble circumstances in western Philadelphia and loves to spend his time on the streets playing basketball. In order to receive a proper upbringing, he will one day be given by his mother Uncle Phil (James Avery) sent to Bel-Air. In the posh area of Los Angeles, the well-off lawyer lives with his family and their butler in a sophisticated house. Will’s cheeky manner and flashy clothes don’t fit into this environment at all. At first Phil has a very difficult time with his new protégé, but Aunt Vivian (Janet Hubert) immediately takes Will into her heart. Will also gets along with the children of the Banks – Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), Ashley (Tatyana M. Ali) and Hilary (Karyn Parsons) – and brings momentum to their previously elegant and monotonous lives.
Between 1990 and 1996, a total of 148 episodes were created in six seasons for the US broadcaster NBC. The series was produced by musician Quincy Jones, at whose suggestion the then 20-year-old, acting inexperienced Will Smith was hired.
The series was last seen on German TV almost two years ago on Nitro.
