The price of chicken meat fell again this Monday, $ 5 per kilowhich is added to previous decreases that place the accumulated low of $15 per kilo, since the beginning of April.

The novelty was confirmed to The Observer by executives and merchants linked to the Union of Meat Vendors (UVC), who admitted that this happens when it is highly probable that in the next few hours the price of beef will increaseafter several weeks without changes after the rise of 25% that it had from mid-January to mid-March.

They project that the new rise in beef could be around $10 per kilo.

That drop of $5 per kilo in the price of poultry meat is immediately transferred to the consumerconsidering the logistics of buying and selling carried out by butchers, it was explained.

Therefore, the price will range from this Tuesday from $120 to $140 for good quality chickenin a market in which there may be offers below in the case of frozen chicken or above in some points of sale that usually have the same or similar producers, but at more expensive prices.

Another option at the high price of beef and with a probable rise is that of pork. The kilo of bondiola, on average, is $180, well below even the roast on offer at $230 and with a difference: 100% is used, it is not a bone-in cut.

Chicken and pork meat are well below the prices that must be paid for the most demanded product in butcher shops, minced meat, which is offered for at least $350 in the case of good quality products.

Another aspect that butchers point out as an advantage for those who buy poultry or pork meat is that they admit a wide range of elaborations and complements, an aspect in which they do not give advantage to beef.

One of the merchants emphasized that chicken and pork meat, if they remain at these levels that he considers attractive, are products of competitive quality and price in a scenario in which the value of beef is far from having adjustments to the low.

Although there are no official data on what is happening in 2022, the latest indicators indicate that each year in Uruguay there is a per capita consumption of close to 50 kilos of beef, with a consumption of poultry meat in the axis of 23 kilos. and one of pork close to 16 kilos. The consumption of other meats is not very relevant, even sheep is barely three kilos per person each year.
