“The precision self-defense strikes are in response to a series of continuous and largely unsuccessful attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militias that began on October 17,” the statement said.
US President Joe Biden ordered the strikes “to make it clear that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will protect itself, its personnel and interests,” the minister said.
He added that this was a separate operation from Israel’s war against the Palestinian group Hamas.
As Austin said, the United States does not want a wider conflict, but if Iran-backed groups do not relent, the United States will not hesitate to take additional steps to protect its armed forces.
