The port of Dakar wants to get rid of ammonium nitrate, the substance that caused the Beirut disaster

The port of Dakar wants a cargo of 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate to be removed as soon as possible.

A similar amount exploded in the Lebanese capital Beirut early this month. At least 171 people were killed in the devastating explosion, more than 6,000 were injured.

The port is not far from the densely populated center of Senegal’s capital, which is home to more than 1 million people. According to the port authority, the owner of the cargo has now found a warehouse outside the city to store the ammonium nitrate.

“The owner is trying to get permission from the Ministry of Environment to dispose of the cargo as soon as possible,” said a statement. The cargo is intended for Mali.

It is not known how long the material has been in port. The port authority says that international rules for the storage of hazardous substances are strictly observed.
