The Politicization of Free Textbooks and Its Impact on Education for Children and Adolescents

The director of the Movement to Support Street Working Children AC (Matraca), Érika Antonio Blanco, considered that the debate around the new Free Textbooks should be opened to also touch on the different contexts in which children find themselves. , girls and adolescents such as violence and addictions.

And he considered that the issue has been more political than educational since boys and girls were not taken into account in its implementation.

Has the issue of textbooks been politicized?

“We work with the IVEA and the IVEA is now changing its model, also somewhat adapted to the new study plans that are coming out. Yes, it is a somewhat controversial topic and it has been handled as more political than educational.”

In his opinion, the issue must stop being politicized and think about the right to education of girls, boys and adolescents.

“We have reviewed the contents a little and yes there are spelling mistakes, content as such that we would have to see in practice how it works, but it is not about trial and error, but rather thinking about the girls and boys. and adolescents.”

Furthermore, he said that their participation in the creation of the courses and content was not taken into account.

He considered that all the discussion that is taking place around the topic should be used to talk about the different contexts in which minors find themselves, such as violence and addictions.

“And it would also be taking advantage of this discussion that has taken place to call into question and shed light on the situation that girls, boys and adolescents are experiencing. Because we don’t just talk about the educational issue and the contents; but also the contexts in which they live such as violence, addictions and their needs.”

Antonio Blanco added that other situations that children face should be addressed now that they have become the focus of attention.

“Since we are turning to look at childhood, which is almost not a visible topic, I think all of this could be taken advantage of. I have spoken with some teachers and they say that they would also require a training process, it is also necessary that they have a training process before being able to show the knowledge to the boys and girls.”

Recently, the president of the State Human Rights Commission, Namiko Matzumoto Benítez, said that, although at the state level it has no influence on the issue of free textbooks, they did receive a complaint from the National Action Party that was forwarded to the National Human Rights Commission.

“The material jurisdiction of the state commission is limited to the territory of the state of Veracruz and state and municipal authorities, so both the content of the textbooks and their distribution to the different federal entities is in charge of federal authorities and if there are Any complaint in this regard must be addressed by the National Human Rights Commission.”
