The Philistines, in addition to the people of which the Bible speaks, referred to at the time of Ok to those ignorant, petty, limited, materialistic people with no aspirations in life other than to eat, sleep and survive. Does it ring a bell? I bet you’ve seen a Philistine at some point…or maybe you’re seeing one right now.
But in case you don’t recognize them, Ok Here he portrays a few Philistines displaying their physical and spiritual laziness. Obese people sleeping it off without paying attention to beauty, represented by a violinist (again Ok symbolically uses the violin). Only that beautiful woman seems to appreciate —and a lot— what the musician does.
For OK, who saw himself as an artist misunderstood by society, this image is quite a declaration of intent, quite a denunciation. Culturally and morally ruined people do not give importance to what really matters, and it is well known that this type of people was the one that abounded before and is the one that abounds now
Art is complicated sometimes. Who is this man playing for…? Luckily there is always someone who gives meaning to art, even if he is only one person… even if it is only the artist himself.
