The Phenomenon of the Perseid Meteor Shower in Indonesia 2023: Best Time to See and Effects

KOMPAS.com – The phenomenon of the Perseid meteor shower will adorn the night sky around the world and reach its peak on August 12-13 2023.

Head of the Space Research Center for the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Emanuel Sungging revealed that the peak of the Perseid meteor shower in Indonesia can be seen during observation time at 00.14-05.36 WIB.

In addition, he said that the Perseid meteor shower is a phenomenon that occurs throughout the year in Indonesia.

“The difference between the Perseid meteor shower and other meteor showers is that it depends on time, because each time it crosses a different area throughout the year. Meanwhile, in Indonesia itself this phenomenon always occurs throughout the year,” he told Kompas.com, Friday (11/8/2023) .

Emanuel further revealed that the Perseid meteor shower occurs when the Earth orbits the Sun and often passes through the cosmic dust region in the solar system.

Where, the cosmic dust becomes a source of meteor showers when the dust enters the Earth’s atmosphere.

What is the Perseid meteor shower?

Reported from Compass TVA meteor shower is a phenomenon that occurs when a space object crosses into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Meteors are caused by the earth’s orbit intersecting with the orbits of other space objects such as comets or asteroids.

When the earth passes through the orbit of a celestial body, it will produce rocks that fall into the earth’s atmosphere.

When it enters the Earth through the atmosphere, meteors will burn and appear to cause a reddish tail behind them or are called comets.

A number of meteors that fall to Earth will look like raindrops, so they are called meteor showers.

Then, in mid-August 2023, a meteor shower appears to radiate from a point in the sky in the constellation Perseus, so this phenomenon is called the Perseid meteor shower.

This meteor shower is caused by Earth passing through debris left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

The event occurs from July to August every year. The Perseid meteor shower is also called the best celestial phenomenon of 2023.

What are the effects of the Perseid meteor shower?

Emanuel revealed that the Perseid meteor shower is a phenomenon that often occurs in Indonesia.

He also said that the Perseid meteor shower which will occur on August 12-13 2023 will not have a significant impact on the earth.

“There is no impact, instead you can see beautiful scenery and can be used as a tourist destination,” he said.

There will be 100 meteors per hour

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most prolific shooting star shows of the year, with up to 100 meteors per hour expected to be visible during peak hours, according to the American Meteor Society.

The absolute peak time for the Perseid meteor shower is predicted to be at midnight on August 13 and the peak time for the Perseid meteor shower lasts about 16 hours, according to Sky at Night.

Because the peak lasts so long, it will be possible to see a shooting star as soon as it gets dark.

In the early hours of August 13, the sky will be pitch black no matter where you are.

Additionally, the constellation Perseus, from which the meteors originate, will appear higher in the northwestern sky, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.

How to watch the Perseid meteor shower

According to Live Science, the best way to see shooting stars is to find a remote observation site away from city lights.

Then let your eyes get used to the darkness for 20 minutes. After that, you can sit or lie down and look at the sky.

Although the meteors appear to have come from Perseus, they can appear in any sky.

This year, it peaks when two other minor meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids, are also active.

You can see meteor showers well with just the naked eye without the need to use tools.

However, if you want to do sky observations and astronomy, then the best option is to use a pair of binoculars or a small telescope to get the most detailed views of the cosmos.
