the number of reported cases worldwide exceeds 10 million

Ten million cases of the new coronavirus were officially diagnosed worldwide on Sunday June 28, according to a count by Agence France-Presse. Among these cases, 498,779 deaths were recorded, especially in Europe, the continent most affected (2,637,546 cases and 195,975 deaths), as well as in the United States (2,510,323 cases, including 125,539 deaths), countries most affected.

The number of cases reported worldwide has doubled since May 21 and more than a million new cases have been recorded in the past six days alone. By way of comparison, ninety-four days passed between the announcement of the first case in China and the identification of a million infections worldwide. The pandemic is now progressing most rapidly in Latin America, with more than 400,000 cases recorded in the last seven days on the continent.

However, these assessments only reflect a fraction of the actual number of contaminations. The American Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) estimate the order of ten times more than the number of Americans who have been infected, i.e. more than 20 million people, which represents between 5 and 8% of population.

  • To the United States, contagion is increasing in 30 of the 50 states, particularly in the largest and most populated in the South and West : California, Texas and Florida.
  • L’Asia seems to be experiencing an increase in the number of daily cases, now driven by sustained spread of the disease in India (528,859 cases, including 118,398 in the past seven days), Pakistan (202,955, 26,338 new) and Bangladesh (137,787, 25,481 new).
  • For the “First time in months”, l’Europe is experiencing an increase in the number of weekly cases, especially in eleven countries, warned the World Health Organization (WHO), alerting the ability of health systems to cope with this rebound.
  • The Russia reported on Sunday 6,791 new cases of coronavirus contamination. The total number of infections now stands at 634,437, the third highest in the world, behind the United States and Brazil.

Partial reconfigurations

These figures are pushing more and more countries or regions to decide on local reconstitution measures, such as Florida and Texas, in the United States, the northern suburbs of Lisbon, in Portugal, or two german cantons (whose reaction ” quick ” was greeted by the director of the WHO Europe branch, Hans Kluge).

China announced on Sunday the confinement of nearly half a million people near the capital, Beijing, which has been hit since mid-June by a rebound in Covid-19, which the authorities still describe as “Serious and complex”. The Asian country has largely contained the epidemic, but the emergence of some three hundred new cases in the city in the space of just over two weeks is fueling fears of a second wave. The outbreak was detected in Xinfadi, a wholesale market in the south of the city which supplies most of the capital’s supermarkets and restaurants with fresh produce.

In Beijing, Sunday June 28, 2020.

The town hall has already launched a vast screening campaign, closed schools, called on the Beijingers not to leave the capital and confined several thousand people to residential areas deemed to be at risk.

Local authorities also announced on Sunday the confinement of the township of Anxin, located 60 kilometers south of Beijing, in northern Hebei province. Eleven cases linked to the Beijing epidemic rebound have been identified.
