The number of new cases of Covid-19 in the world has risen by more than 50% this week, while the number of deaths from the disease has fallen by nine percent, according to AFP.

The average number of infections detected during the day has exceeded one million this week, more specifically – it has reached 1.18 million or 57% more than in the previous week.

54% of the total number of confirmed cases – 4,490,612 – were recorded in the European region during the week, and a further 32% or 2,636,831 cases – in the United States and Canada.

However, the number of confirmed cases gives only a partial picture of the overall situation, given the different levels of testing and data collection practices in different countries.

The fastest-spreading viruses have been recorded in Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, where the number of infections has more than doubled, with 157% and 138% respectively.

In the United States and Canada, it has risen by 92%, in Europe by 47% and in the Middle East by 37%, while in Africa, where the most contagious form of the omicron virus was first detected, the increase was only 8%, while in Asia it was even 2% lower.

Records of the weekly infection rate have been recorded in about 30 countries around the world – 1907 cases per 100,000 population in Denmark, 1784 in Ireland, 1497 in Cyprus, 1441 in Great Britain and 1260 in France.

Meanwhile, mortality from Covid-19 fell by 9% to an average of 6,330 deaths per day. 53% of them were found in Europe, where the disease claimed 23,324 lives in seven days, and 24% in the United States and Canada, where a total of 10,433 people died.
