Of all the tests performed, 56% (79,454 tests) were related to screening of educational institutions, and 44% (63,194 tests) were related to the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 13% (911 infected) were related to educational screening and 87% (5,945 infected) to the rest of the population.

Of all the infections detected in the screening, 64.1% of epidemiologists found during the survey that symptoms of the disease had been observed. The SPKC calls on parents to carefully assess their children’s health. If a child has a cough, runny nose, feeling unwell, fever or other signs of illness, do not allow the child to go to school.

Last week, an average of 20,378 tests were performed per day (previously 21,804) and an average of 979 new cases were detected (previously 604). This is the second highest number of newly infected people in a single week. An even higher incidence of Covid-19 in one week was recorded only in the first week of January 2021, according to the SPKC.

The increase in morbidity is in all age groups, especially in the age group 10-14 years. The reproductive rate (R) of Covid-19 infection has risen to 1.38 in the past week (1.21 in the week before), indicating the spread of the infectious disease in the community, which cannot be significantly controlled by current safety conditions.

In the cases of Covid-19 detected last week and the vaccination status of infected people, 5,485 people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed the vaccination course, representing a total of 80% of all cases last week, while 1,371 people had been vaccinated. 20% of all patients last week.

Comparing the prevalence of infection per 100,000 population among vaccinated and unvaccinated / partially vaccinated people, Covid-19 infection was 2.9 times more common in unvaccinated and partially vaccinated people in Latvia than in fully vaccinated people.

As the number of vaccinees increases and the prevalence of Covid-19 infection continues, mostly among unvaccinated people, the overall incidence of vaccinated people will increase, according to the SPKC. However, among vaccinated people, the disease is usually milder and requires less hospitalization, so the proportion of vaccinated and infected people should always be seen in the context of the number of prevented Covid-19 cases in the general population.

The European average of 14 days of cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population continues to decline slightly to 146.9 (156.8 a week earlier). In Latvia, this indicator has increased to 398 (316.7 a week ago).

In the previous week, the number of imported Covid-19 cases has increased (99), accounting for 1.4% of all cases in Latvia. During the 34th to 39th week, the patients most often came to Latvia from Turkey (57 cases), Russia (40), Great Britain (26), Georgia (25), Germany (25), Lithuania (23), Sweden (20), Greece (19), Italy (19), Estonia (17), Finland (17), Spain (17).

The SPCC recalls that existing safety regulations and Covid-19 prevention measures, such as:

  • not to go to public places even with the slightest symptoms of respiratory disease (for example, sore throat, mild cough, fever);
  • hand hygiene (regular hand washing and / or disinfection),
  • correct use of the face mask (covering the nose and chin),
  • regular ventilation of the premises (several times a day, wide opening of the windows so that the fresh air circulates in the room as much as possible),
  • as far as possible to work remotely.

Already reported to have been discovered last day 479 new cases of Covid-19.
