The number of attacks on Exchange Server has increased tenfold

“Check Point detects thousands of attacks; since March 11, the number of abuse attempts has increased tenfold,” said Pavel Krejčí, a security researcher at Check Point.

According to him, the attacks mainly affected the USA (17% of all attempts to exploit vulnerabilities), followed by Germany (6%), the United Kingdom (5%), the Netherlands (5%) and Russia (4%). However, the increase in attacks continues in the Czech Republic.

This is also confirmed by the data of the antivirus company Eset, which discovered 500 infected mail servers in the Czech Republic alone. Less than two weeks after the vulnerability was discovered.

“We see the causes of this situation, among other things, in the large number of servers that are so-called exposed to the Internet. At the same time, there is a relatively significant number of IT infrastructures in a number of global companies in the Czech Republic, which ultimately worsens our situation compared to other countries, ”explained Miroslav Dvořák, Technical Director of the Czech branch of Eset.

Check Point also found that 23% of attacks targeted government organizations and the military sector. 15% of attacks targeted the manufacturing sector and affected other sectors, such as banking and financial services (14% of attacks), software organizations (7%) and healthcare (6%).

Security experts warned about the vulnerability of Exchange Server last week. These vulnerabilities allow access to e-mail boxes on the server and subsequent remote code execution. At the same time, Microsoft warns that these vulnerabilities are currently being actively exploited.

In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MLSA) as well as the servers of the Czech Social Security Administration were attacked due to Exchange Server errors. Last week, there were 3,000 vulnerable servers in the Czech Republic.
