March 1 has a special taste for Chartres, on Eure-et-Loir. It celebrates the birth, 233 years ago today, of General François Séverin-Marceau, “the youngest and bravest of the Republic”.
Every year, to celebrate his birthday and that of his death, respectively March 1 and September 21the municipality of Chartres adorns its statue, installed near the Place des Epars, in the city center and at a strategic point of Chartres traffic, with French flags.
“His courage, his youth and his talent”
The general on duty during the revolution remains a model for the Cyrards. “Interesting by the way since the second large statue of Marceau is located in… Saint Cyr”, confides the municipality to us.
And to add: “this flag is a tribute to his courage, his youth, and his talent”.
Note that this is not the only tribute to General Marceau in Chartres, a square bears his name, as well as a column, a street and a high school!
The general culture point: who is General Marceau?
He was born in Chartres and died a hero in battle, at only 27 years old. He first joined the Angoulême regiment, then between July 14, 1789 in the Parisian National Guard, he was appointed captain of the 2nd company of the 1st battalion of volunteers from Eure-et-Loir then lieutenant- second colonel. Passed in service and at different ranks in the Ardennes, the West and the Sambre-et-Meuse before succumbing to a fatal shot from a Tyrolean in the forest of Höchstenbach.
