The Nightmarish Reality of Lost or Damaged Luggage: JFK Tops List of Worst Airports

Losing luggage or receiving it damaged is a nightmare for any traveler, especially since it is increasingly common for this service to have an additional cost when buying the ticket.

Worse, some airlines have been less willing to refund fully to travelers for lost or damaged property.

JFK, New York’s main airport, is where luggage is most likely to be lost or damaged in the US.according to Forbes Advisorwho analyzed the statistics of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from 2013 to 2022.

To determine which airports are most likely to lose, damage or deliver baggage late, Forbes Advisor compared the 100 busiest air terminals in the country in four metrics key using TSA data.

-Number of property damage claims per 100,000 domestic passengers: 30% of score.
-Number of property loss claims per 100,000 domestic passengers: 30% of score.
-Percentage of property damage claims fully reimbursed: 20% of score.
-Percentage of property loss claims fully reimbursed: 20% of score.

The John F. Kennedy (JFK) Terminal had the highest rate of claims for lost and damaged baggage. The neighbor Newark Liberty International Airport also ranked among the worst, ranking No. 8 on the list, noted Pix11.

Immediately behind JFK were Miami International Airport (MIA) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Followed by Norfolk, Virginia (ORF), Fort Lauderdale, Florida (FLL), Boston (BOS) and Las Vegas (LAS).

Three of the 15 worst airports for lost and damaged luggage are in New York, also including the Albany International Terminal (ALB) and the Westchester County Airport (HPN).

Punctually, American Airlines Tops Worst Airlines List for mishandling baggage, while Hawaiian Airlines reported the lowest rate of mishandling baggage.

Adding to the frustration, between 2013 and 2022 none of the 100 busiest airports in the country refunded more than 48% of claims for lost or damaged baggage.
