The Next Company to Raise Gaming Prices: Will Capcom Follow Sony and Microsoft?

The next company to raise its gaming prices?

Sony has done it, so has Microsoft. Now even Capcom is flagging because they can raise their game prices. During the Tokyo Game Show (via VGC) Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto said that he “personally, I think the game prices are too low”. It should have happened more, he asserts.

Development costs are about 100 times higher than they were during the Famicom (NES) era, but the price of the software hasn’t increased that much.

There is also a need to raise wages to attract talent. Given that wages are increasing across the industry, I believe the option to raise unit prices is a sound business strategy.

In several cases, full price games have thus increased to 70 dollars (from 60). The increase corresponds to approximately SEK 100. Capcom has continued to charge $60 for example Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4.

Possibly, it’s only a matter of time before Capcom does like Sony, Microsoft and others.
