Nationalgeographic.co.id—“Come on, quickly! The beach is still quiet, ”cried a young mother in a red hat to her colleague. He made himself a marker for the group that followed behind him to stop at the same place. Then the mats began to be spread. The food boxes were opened. So began an exciting conversation between them.

Wairhubing Beach is quite unique because it is overgrown with coconut and ketapang trees almost two kilometers long. Coconut and ketapang formations create a fairly tight canopy cover. As if not allowing sunlight to penetrate the ground. No wonder many visitors come here because they want to relax on the beach without having to overheat.

“There is [kerja] devotion, clean-up in [pantai] Wairhubing. Let’s join, “asked Adrianus Ratu, the Community Leader Maumere Diving.

I agreed to his invitation.

Clean-up activities at Wairhubing Beach are carried out almost every day. Only on weekends, the frequency of work is slightly increased due to the large number of visitors. Many ketapang leaves fall from tree branches and fall to the sand of the beach. The view of the beach is not beautiful because it is covered in litter, and also trash from visitors who come.

This is where Ambrosius Roylland Moat Laka, a local youth, worries about the fate of his beach. He started inviting young people around his house to work.

“Instead of sitting around incoherently, we’d better get together and make something up,” he said. Armed with a steel blade, he and the other young men began to collect ketapang litter. “Use this then just stick it into the leaves on the ground. Gradually it will collect a lot to resemble meat on a skewer, ”he added.

Roylland initiated the establishment of KOPIKOW — the Wairhubing-Watuliwung-Wetakara Complex Concern Community. It contains energetic and creative young people who have high concern for the coastal areas where they live.
