The New York Philharmonic will only start again in 2021

After the renowned Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic canceled their fall season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Philharmoniker announced on Thursday night that there would be no regular concerts before January 6, 2021. “Our biggest concern is the health and safety of our audience, our musicians and our employees,” it said.

But it will be examined whether performances on a smaller scale might be possible, said the president of the orchestra, Deborah Borda. The fall season cancellation is estimated to mean a loss of around $ 9 million in missing ticket sales.

The neighboring Metropolitan Opera had already canceled its autumn season. The Opera House wants to reopen with a gala on December 31st.

The metropolis of New York is particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. A four-phase relaxation period began on Monday, during which cultural institutions are also allowed to reopen in about five weeks – in compliance with hygiene regulations, with distance and masks.
