The New York Marathon: The Holy Grail of Runners

In the world of running, one event remains legendary: the marathon. The distance (42.195 km) seems unreal and this event has written the most beautiful lines in the history of sport. It is also the dream of many runners. And in this event, there is the holy grail: the New York marathon. Many people want to go there and all those who have done so are forever marked by it.

On the one hand because this race is the most popular in the world with 50,000 participants from 150 nations, on an incredible route through different neighborhoods and in an atmosphere made magical by the support of the spectators gathered at the side of the road. There are around a million people along a route that is not easy. Starting the New York marathon is feeling an emotion and intensity that is difficult to describe. This is what Fortunata Galastro will experience, once the national anthem is played. The Stéphanoise who started running about five years ago never imagined one day living this experience. And yet, this Sunday, November 5, she will be at the start of the 52nd edition. From New York, she confided in us her feelings. “It’s the runner’s holy grail to hear everyone. one day someone had told me I was going to do it, I would have laughed. As a slow runner, I need people throughout my journey and an international marathon provides that atmosphere!”

Fortunata did not predestine herself, the day she started running, to run such a long distance. “I did my first long distance with the Walloon Brabant half-marathon in 2021 before continuing this distance in Ghent, Paris, Bruges, Rotterdam or even Lisbon and finally telling myself that I could try a marathon. There , I experienced what we call in the industry the wall (Editor’s note: after around thirty kilometers, the energy suddenly disappears and the ordeal begins) but I finished within the set objective, in less than five hours: 4h57. My goal here is just to have fun.”

The Stéphanoise du James made sure to prepare. “For my preparation, I have run all the semi-finals in Belgium since September with a personal best in Bruges in 2h11.”
