The new US ambassador to Latvia cites strengthening security and the fight against Russian aggression as the main priority

US President Joe Biden has appointed Christopher Robinson to the post of US ambassador to Latvia. The new envoy took the ambassador’s oath a month ago, and on Tuesday the solemn accreditation ceremony took place in the Riga Palace.

“Mr. President, I have the pleasure and honor to present before you His Excellency, the Ambassador of the United States of America, Christopher Robinson,” said Head of State Protocol, Raymond Janson.

After submitting his credentials and meeting with President Egils Levitas, the new ambassador said that he will focus on security issues in Riga: “Our biggest challenge right now is, of course, security in Europe and the fight against Russian aggression. As the President of the United States affirmed during his visit to Kyiv yesterday, we are more determined than ever and will do everything we can to support Ukraine. And as the president said, for as long as it takes.”

Robinson promises to strengthen US-Latvian relations, especially in the field of defense: “We are committed to deepening relations both bilaterally and as part of NATO. Latvia has made a great contribution to European security. And we will continue to strengthen and deepen our relationship.”

Robinson is a senior foreign service career diplomat. Before being confirmed as ambassador, he worked in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, but before that he was a counselor at the US Embassy in Moscow and speaks Russian. Previously, he was also the deputy director of the State Department for Russian affairs. Robinson has represented the USA in various countries, including Belarus. Earned a master’s degree in strategic studies from the National War College.
