Seattle’s new NHL club will be called Kraken. The name, logo and colors of the team that will join the Overseas Hockey League in 2021 were announced today by its representatives.
The name Kraken was a clear fan favorite from the beginning. Since 2018, when Seattle was admitted to the NHL, there has also been speculation about the names Sockeyes (a species of salmon), Evergreens or Metropolitans. In the end, however, the nickname from the sea monster from Norse mythology won.
“Kraken is a name born of fans. They designed and fought for it,” said Tod Leiweke, executive head of Seattle, who will expand the NHL as the 32nd club next year.
The team logo is the letter “S” stylized as octopus tentacles with a red-red eye. The letter “S” is also a reference to the logo of the Seattle Metropolitans, which won the Stanley Cup in 1917 before the NHL was formed.
In accordance with the marine theme, the main colors of the team will be four shades of blue from the darkest, which is supposed to symbolize the depths of the ocean, to the lightest “ice”. The fifth color is a distinctive red from the logo.
Thanks to hockey players, the city will have the third club in the northwestern United States in the elite North American leagues, after the Seahawks in the NFL and the Mariners in the MLB. So far, the last newcomer to the NHL in 2017 was the Vegas Golden Knights team, which sensationally reached the Stanley Cup final in its debut season.
