Private lessons are considered one of the problems facing education in Arab societies, as they strain the pockets of parents, make the student not pay attention to the teacher’s explanation, and have negative effects on the entire educational process. It reduces the student’s self-confidence, and despite that, there are some families who consider it an educational necessity, and flock to it in order to increase academic achievement.

According to a group of parents of students, the price per hour for students in the first cycle ranges between 150 and 200 dirhams, compared to 250 to 400 dirhams for the second and third cycles, while the hour jumps to 500 dirhams on the night of the exam, which constitutes additional and significant financial burdens on the family budget.

Remedial classes

The Emirates Foundation for School Education launched a supportive initiative for students in public schools, namely the “Digital Academies”, to raise students’ levels and support them by allocating remedial classes for all major subjects in cooperation with specialized and professional teachers to provide this support. Education or other curricula, by asking schools to establish digital academies for revision with symbolic amounts, similar to government schools, to reduce the financial burden on them caused by the prices of private lessons.

Parents of students in the twelfth grade confirmed that they resorted to private lessons because, according to their expression, they are a “lifeline for their children,” especially if they are in the secondary stage, which determines their academic and practical path.

He pointed out that the educational authorities are working to include employment contracts with teachers on the condition that they do not give private lessons, and thus they avoid any external dispute that may occur between the teacher and the guardian, and to achieve the principle of equal access to education for all.

He stated that the state allowed the establishment of private institutes licensed in accordance with the rules, where students can take remedial lessons.

Qamar Al-Shami, Heba Mustafa, and Fatima Al-Hammadi (parents) called on the schools to introduce remote tutoring classes that are conducted by teachers from inside the school with symbolic sums, similar to government schools that are keen to provide intensive tutoring and revision classes during the examination period, pointing out that this initiative will limit the participation of their children. in private lessons.

They stressed that the classes will contribute to raising the level of students in scientific subjects, especially that they are provided under the supervision of the school administration and by specialized teachers for the subjects, and indicated that this initiative is the best way to eliminate the phenomenon of private lessons.

They pointed to the high prices of private lessons, which jumped from 200 dirhams per hour to 500 dirhams during exam days, especially for scientific subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, considering that social networking sites are an exchange for bidding prices for private lessons.

And they continued that the difficulty of the curricula and their inability to teach their children is a major reason for coping with this phenomenon, noting that a large number of schools were fighting it with remedial classes inside the school and under its supervision.
