In Wagner’s Ring cycle, the treasure hunters find themselves in a musical gold rush. Romantic composers paint golden soundscapes. The impressionists make goldfish and gold dust shine musically. And even Oberteufel Mephistopheles shows commercial know-how on the opera stage when he sings: “Gold rules the world.”
