The municipality of El Grado begins composting – Society

“Compost to preserve” is the title of the campaign initiated by the City Council of El Grado in order to meet the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. For this, it considers two fundamental axes: the reduction of the organic fraction in the garbage container (remains) and the recovery as a carbon sink, of the soil of the orchards and public areas through composting.

This year, it has started with two actions, one aimed at sensitizing schoolchildren and the entire educational community about this practice and the second focused on market gardeners.

The first of these actions consisted of the creation of a school composting area involving the entire educational community (teachers, students, Ampa and the City Council). This resource will be an experimental educational tool for the center. This composting area will collect the organic waste that is generated in the school and in the homes of the students.

The resulting compost will be used for the garden and school planters, and for the maintenance of the public park where the composter is located, working together for a common good.

The children of the municipality also sign up for community composting.

The second performance, aimed at market gardeners in the municipality, began last May with a training session with a theoretical part on nature, dynamic properties and functions and an experimental part, on knowledge of the soils through observation and field analysis. In addition, it had an experimental part on the knowledge of the state of the soils of the orchards through observation and a field analysis. Also, balanced and harmonious fertilization was discussed, giving special relevance to composting. With this, the participants have been given skills to determine what conditions their garden is in and how to improve and recover a living soil.

During the summer the composting processes have been tutored and awareness activities have been carried out in September and October. The company Natural and social environment, dedicated to education and rural revitalization, has been in charge of technical coordination. The Provincial Council of Huesca has financed 80% of the project, within its line of aid for environmental education and dissemination aimed at local entities.
