The municipality is currently slow to respond to the «bicycle traps» sent by Rigans / Article / LSM.lv

Cyclists in Riga and Pieriga have already registered in two months more than eight hundred placeswhich are uncomfortable, cumbersome or even dangerous for cycling. These data have been compiled by the association “Data School” public initiative “Bicycles”, which transmits the submitted information to the Traffic Department of the Riga City Council. Most registered “bike traps” are high curbs or pits made by the department previously indicated as the easiest and quickest problems to solve. However, so far only 11 of the 813 “bicycle traps” have received official responses, and the Data School is aware of only a few that have actually been eliminated. –

Nika Aleksejeva, Head of the Data School Association: I would like the feedback from the municipality to be more activeMara Rosenberg

The head of the association Nika Aleksejeva says: “Of course, these places are most marked in the center, and problems with the existing infrastructure are often mentioned – as if there are bicycle lanes, but they are not separated, so drivers often stop there, thus blocking cyclists. There are also a number of demands for new infrastructure, such as pedestrian crossings where they exist [jāierīko] according to convenience requirements. Criticism is also about [ceļazīmju] poles in the middle of the road, placed with drivers in mind rather than cyclists. (..)

In general, I would say that I would like the feedback from the Riga City Council Traffic Department to be more active, but we understand that the city has other priorities. But this project is not over and we will continue to remind ourselves. “

CONTEXT:

“Data School” applied to the cycling community in Riga four years ago, in the project “Velodati” inviting Rigans to map their daily routes and send them to create a network of the city’s “hottest” cycling routes. The city did not collect such data.
