April 20 The new Klaipėda State Musical Theater (KVMT) building that will open its doors will become the most modern professional art institution in the country that fulfills the needs of artists. The mark of quality created by the theater is the eternal breathing of art, which unites the face of the city of Klaipėda and the seaside landscape shaped by historical events. Musical theater activity is like a wave, an incessant sense of eternity, creativity and sound!

A new style – a dynamic revival of the theater
The sea wave leitmotif has existed in theater style for more than three decades. Since the establishment of the theater in 1987 until 2018 the used logo was created by a well-known Lithuanian graphic designer, professor Audrias Klim. Having set new goals, cherishing traditions and starting the construction of a new building, in 2018, KVMT decided to update its style as well, abandoning the image of a breaking wave and choosing the idea of a wave as a perpetuum mobile (perpetual engine). in 2024 the theater, emphasizing its image, prestige, openness, sociability as a modern, national, professional center of performing arts, and taking into account the longevity and continuity of its activities, forms the standards for the use of elements of the unified style of the new brand and the theater itself.
The theater takes the path of renewal while preserving the main idea of the visual solution of the logo – a wave-five. The new range of colors is dictated by the architectural and interior solutions of the theater building. For the interior of the building, textured clay plaster shades are used, close to the color tones of the beach sand, and wave-shaped fragments are used for the roof. The new KVMT brand, like its predecessor, is created using a symbol and a logo. The graphic designer Virginijus Bakas, who updated the KVMT style guide, deepens the design links with sea waves, as if emphasizing the geographical location of the theater, and chooses five lines as an allusion to the musical quintet. The change in the thickness of the lines and the overlap and asymmetry of the wave height are a reference to the dynamic development of the theater activity.
New color solution
The blue color of the former theater logo is replaced by the color palette of dune sand and Lithuanian clay. Such a colorful ambition was determined by the idea of creating the most important part of the musical theater – the audience hall and its acoustic space. The UAB “Barzdoti Vabalai” team, which offered Lithuanian concert institutions unprecedented wall decor – clay plaster – took inspiration from nature: they spent several hours photographing Lithuanian dunes and the patterns of wind waves left in them, making special tools to extract them, etc.
After the decision was made that the acoustics of the audience hall will be formed on the basis of Lithuanian clay, the creation of the interior details of the theater followed. “The use of clay in the interior of a public facility of this scale will definitely be the first in Lithuania!” It is innovative and interesting, because a Lithuanian, handmade product is used. Clay moldings in the main hall resemble waves. Interfaces with waves on the logo will be felt throughout the building. We want to emphasize that this is a theater located in a city by the sea”, says the author of the interior project, designer Marius Mateika. – The logo of the Klaipėda State Musical Theater depicts a wave. Even the roof of the new theater building has a wavy shape, like a wave, and the stairs of the theater. We want the person who comes to the theater to feel the uniqueness of this place, a celebration of the soul dedicated only to him. This space must prepare the audience to “experience” the performance”…
The audience is waiting for the Hall of the Sea and the Sea
Names for the new theater halls were chosen by KVMT employees by voting. The large audience hall was named after “Jūras” by the majority of votes, and the small one – “Marių”. Both halls are equipped with places where spectators with mobility disabilities can comfortably watch the events.
The theater project is unique, because great attention is paid to acoustics. In order to ensure that tracks of different genres could sound flawless, appropriate solutions were needed. Thus, the large audience hall is created in a complex 3D shape with special stairs and convexities. A special, unique shape, weight, sound absorption or reflection internal acoustic shell was made for this hall. The orchestra box is movable, if necessary it can be equipped with seats for spectators, the hall is equipped with acoustically friendly chairs with information broadcasting screens on each side. Not only that, the new theater halls will have modern sound and lighting equipment, the latest heating and ventilation systems. Thus, both visitors and those working in the building will be able to enjoy a pleasant environment that combines history and modern architectural and engineering solutions. The new building has spacious rehearsal studios, storage for costumes and decorations, a costume sewing room, modern make-up rooms, comfortable leisure areas and spaces for the audience.
KVMT: a large and ambitious team
Klaipėda State Musical Theater is the largest professional performing arts institution not only in Klaipėda, but also in the entire region of Western Lithuania. Its mission is to present musical performances and concert programs of the highest artistic level to the audience and guests of this region. in 2019 after the theater became a member of the “Opera Europa” association uniting European opera theaters, the international dissemination and networking of the KVMT repertoire intensified.
The theater group lived without its own home for five long years, rehearsed in different spaces of the city of Klaipėda, and all this time showed performances, held premieres that received great attention from Lithuanian audiences and favorable evaluations from art critics, and received international recognition. A new theater building is a dream that has finally come true, which art collectives have been striving for and waiting for, living and creating in difficult conditions. Finally, the artists will realize their great goal – to live, work and create unique projects in the new theater building.
