“The most dangerous place in Earth’s history”: Scientists reveal the area where the largest predators lived

Three of the largest dinosaurs, approximately eight meters long, inhabited the area, several flying reptiles and crocodile-like hunters.

A team of paleontologists has carried out the major revision in almost 100 years of fossil vertebrates found in the rock formations of southeastern Morocco, an area that has been characterized by preserving the remains of fierce predators that inhabited the planet. The study results were recently published in the journal Zookeys.

“This was possibly the most dangerous place in Earth’s history, a place where a human time traveler wouldn’t last long“stated the study’s lead author, Nizar Ibrahim, through a release.

Specialists claim that 100 million years ago the Sahara desert harbored a vast river system, filled with many different species of aquatic and terrestrial animals, including three of the largest predatory dinosaurs, approximately eight meters long.

Also, the remains of several predatory flying reptiles and hunters similar to crocodiles were found. In addition, the diet of many of them depended on fish, and experts claim that the area was full of huge fish.

“The coelacanth, for example, is probably four or even five times larger than the coelacanth today. There was a huge freshwater saw shark called Onchopristis with the most fearsome rostral teeth. They are like spiked daggers, but beautifully shiny, “added Ibrahim.

This set of fossils has been dubbed the ‘Kem Kem Group,’ and according to the researchers, “it provides a window into the age of dinosaurs in Africa.”
