The Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival is at the origin of the friendship between Monaco and China, this friendship will continue, said Friday during an exclusive interview with Xinhua Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, president of the Festival. international circus of Monte-Carlo.
The latter, which opened on Thursday and will end on January 26, includes the participation of the Shandong Acrobatic Troupe (province in eastern China).
Princess Stéphanie is today the linchpin of the demonstration created in 1974 by her father, Prince Rainier III. According to her, the selection criteria for the candidate numbers for the 44th International Circus Festival are very high.
“My father always wanted there to be a guarantee of quality in the number, both artistically and in terms of innovation, with things never seen before while remaining in the traditional discipline of the circus, knowing that it is evolving permanently as we have seen through the Chinese numbers, very innovative in their presentation, their choreography, the work of lights, ”she said.
She felt that the number this year of the Shandong troupe, with the juggling of plates, was just incredible, unheard of. “They are always trying to go further and their presentation is modernized, we see the evolution.”
Their other number, that of juggling hats, is also considered extraordinary. “Chinese numbers have managed to keep the tradition of their circus, while modernizing it (…) They have preserved their identity while evolving, with incredible acrobatic and artistic prowess,” said the princess.
“The Chinese troupes are creating numbers specially for the festival, which represents several years of work beforehand and, for them, it is a pride to present them here. This allowed them to tour to publicize the Chinese circus across Europe. I think this dimension of intercultural exchange conveyed by the circus is very important, “she said.
She remembers that it was her father who several years ago managed to bring the first Chinese circus troupe to perform outside of China and he was very proud of it. This contributed to the development of the friendship between Monaco and China, she said.
“I am therefore quite proud that the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival was at the origin of the friendship between Monaco and China. This friendship will continue thanks in particular to the friendly agreement with the China International Festival, which confirms the strengthening of our ties with the Chinese circus, “said Stéphanie de Monaco.
She went to China for the first time on the occasion of the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. “We had invited several Chinese troupes who won the festival to represent it, because Chinese artists are part of the history of the festival” , she said.
The princess returned to China last November to attend the China International Circus Festival in Zhuhai (south). For her, this festival does incredible things for the circus, which is why she wanted to make this cooperation agreement.
“The China International Circus Festival is very open, the international dimension of its programming is very important for the world of the circus. In Europe, the circus is not doing well at the moment, notably due to many controversies, and my father always said that to save the circus, we have to work together. I think this is the time to stand in solidarity for the circus and we have managed to do that with the China International Circus Festival, with many projects to come, “she said.
According to the organizers, nearly 200 artists from 16 countries participate in the Monte-Carlo festival. This year, this year gives pride of place to the most beautiful conquest of man, the horse. Arabian horses, Friesian horses, Spanish and Portuguese stallions will be presented by the squire team of the Swiss National Circus Knie with on track representatives of the largest Circassian families, Maycol Errani, Ivan Knie and Wiorris Errani.
