The Minister of Labor wants to increase the minimum wage and the transport allowance

Outgoing Labor Minister Moustapha Bayram yesterday announced his intention to raise the minimum wage and transport allowances in the private sector. “We reached an agreement on the need to add 1.9 million Lebanese pounds to the previous increase (in the minimum wage) and to increase the transport allowance to 125,000 (LL per day) in the private sector”, he said at a press conference following a meeting with the Price Index Commission. “We will push for this to be adopted in the public sector,” he added. At the end of October, employees in the private sector were officially granted an increase of 600,000 Lebanese pounds, bringing the amount to 2.6 million pounds. The minister also announced that he had increased tuition assistance, while public teachers have been on strike since the beginning of the week. “We have doubled the amount of tuition assistance. In public schools, it will be 3 million Lebanese pounds per child and, in the private sector, 6 million per child, with a maximum of three children “concerned by this aid, he specified, at a time when the country is sinking into economic collapse and where the national currency once again yesterday broke a depreciation record against the dollar which was trading at more than 49,000 pounds.
