The Mercedes SL received a basic version with a four-cylinder

The new SL, which is to replace several models in Mercedes’ portfolio at once thanks to its return to the canvas roof and four seats, has so far been offered with two eight-cylinder engines. In the SL 55 version with an output of 476 hp and in the SL 63 version with 585 hp.

The new basic version remains under the Mercedes-AMG brand and bears the designation SL 43. The nine-speed automatic transmission this time sends power only to the rear wheels, all-wheel drive is always connected to the eight-cylinder.

The basic SL is powered by a new variant of the 2-liter four-cylinder M139 engine from AMG, which uses an electric turbocharger, a technology derived from Formula 1 racing cars.

The turbocharger is powered by a 48-volt electrical system that powers a second-generation belt-driven starter-generator (RSG). In addition to temporarily increasing performance, the system also acts as a mild-hybrid, allowing sailing and energy recovery to increase efficiency.

The engine produces 280 kW, 381 hp, at 6,750 rpm. 480 Nm of maximum torque is available between 3,250 and 5,000 rpm. A short-term increase in power of 10 kW, 14 hp, from the belt starter generator will also help.

Acceleration from 0-100 km / h is a matter of 4.9 seconds and the maximum speed is 275 km / h. In the combined cycle, the WLTP SL43 consumes 8.9-9.4 l / 100 km.

However, the two-liter from AMG can do higher performance elsewhere. In models A 45 S and CLA 45 S it has an impressive 310 kW, 421 hp, and 500 Nm of torque, making it currently the most powerful series-produced four-cylinder.

You can recognize the two-liter version from the outside by the four oval tailpipes, otherwise it matches the eight-cylinder version.
