The Mercedes GLC chooses the hybrid

OUTSIDE IS SIMILAR, BUT INSIDE … – If the style of the new Mercedes GLC represents a reasoned evolution of that of the previous generation, under the bodywork and inside the cockpit we find many innovations. In addition to the rich technological equipment, the range of engines decreed the change of pace: in line with the plan of Mercedes, which intends to launch only new electric cars from 2025, the electrification of the brand begins today, proposing the new SUV only with hybrid engines (both plug-in and mild-hybrid).

ONLY HYBRID AND WITH 4 CYLINDERS – The new Mercedes GLC it will be exclusively four-wheel drive, with 9G-tronic automatic transmission and a range of fully electrified engines; the thermal component will be both petrol and four-cylinder diesel. Starting from the mild hybrid versions, there are three versions planned for launch: the petrol ones GLC 200 4matic with 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque and the most powerful GLC 300 4matic from 258 HP and 400 Nm. The diesel version will be only one, the GLC 200d 4matic with 197 hp and 440 Nm of torque. All three engines are flanked by a 48V ISG electric unit: it is a current engine that also acts as a generator, the device supplies the new GLC with 23 HP and 200 Nm, to be used during acceleration. Thanks also to its function as an alternator, the ISG allows energy recovery.

LE PLUG-IN – When it hits dealerships next fall, the Mercedes GLC it will also feature three type engines plug-in. Characterized by greater power, thanks to the presence of the 100 kW electric motor, the system is powered by a battery with a capacity of 31.2 kWh, rechargeable in about 30 minutes (from completely discharged) with the 60 DC battery charger. kW (on request), or normally with the 11 kW system. In fully electric mode, all plug-ins have a range of more than 100 km, while switching to performance, petrol 300e 4Matic e 400e 4Matic they have respectively 313 hp and 550 Nm of torque (for the former), and 381 hp and 650 Nm for the latter; the latter is the fastest of the lot, capable of reaching 100 km / h starting from a standstill in 5.6 seconds. The 300d and 4Matic diesel version has a total output of 335 hp and 750 Nm.

STYLE AND SIZE – The new Mercedes GLC it has also been updated in style, while maintaining the current proportions, it can be recognized by more taut and full lines, the front grille and front LED headlights have been redesigned. The tail instead has split optical groups with a three-dimensional effect, while rims from 18 to 20 inches in diameter are available; moreover, for the first time on the GLC it will be possible to choose matching wheel arches, thanks to the AMG line trim. The bodywork instead acquires a few centimeters more: now the German SUV is 471 cm long (6 more than the previous version), while the trunk grows to 600 liters (50 more on the current GLC), nevertheless, the new design allows to improve the aerodynamic efficiency, with the CD (aerodynamic coefficient) passed from 0.31 to 0.29.

LIKE CLASS C – The interior of the new one Mercedes GLC they resume the most recent configuration proposed by the German manufacturer, seen on the last C-Class, with the all-new dashboard that extends towards the occupants surrounded by thin LED lights. There are five rounded vents, and the “climate” is managed from the 11.9-inch vertical central display, while the one for the driver is 12.3 inches. The passenger compartment features the latest generation Mercedes MBUX infotainment system, among the various functions it includes augmented reality (as an option) which uses images recorded from the outside to improve navigation, the voice assistant “hey mercedes” and connectivity with home automation. In addition, the fingerprint sensor can be added to the MBUX to access the system and the head-up display, which projects navigation and driving assistance information above the bonnet and on the driver’s side.

STEERING REAR AXLE – The technology of the new Mercedes GLC it also runs outside the cockpit, in fact it is possible to request the rear steering axle, with a steering angle of up to 4.5 degrees which improves the agility and handling of the vehicle (it only comes into operation under 60 km / h). For off-road, the technical package is available, which includes air suspension, underbody protections and an increased ground clearance of 20 millimeters, while the AMG line version with lowered suspension is available for sports enthusiasts. The ADAS systems have been updated, the road sign recognition device has been refined as well as that used for detecting distance (now it reacts and recognizes vehicles stopped on the roadway even when the GLC is launched at 100 km / h). The parking assistance system with 360-degree cameras has also been improved; finally, as an option, there are also digital lights, which take advantage of the reference lines of the trajectory in the curves and animations, in addition to the spotlight function that identifies and outlines pedestrians in conditions of poor visibility.
