It is the fifth humanitarian center to open under the administration of Eric Adams. It is located in the Brooklyn cruise terminal, from where you can see the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of migration. This is another of the solutions that the city government has proposed in the face of the arrival of migrants, whose number already exceeds 42,000.

The 600-room Paramount Hotel in Times Square will also be converted into a hostel. But the conditions in these temporary shelters have been criticized by activists including the Legal Aid Society. What is needed, they say, is to place families in permanent housing.

In this other municipal shelter, the Row hotel, migrants complain about the conditions of the meals and point out that some minors are sick. In contrast, other reports criticize the alleged waste of free food that is not eaten and the dangers posed by trying to cook in the rooms.

“Sometimes it comes a little raw, it’s a little spicy and that but we have to eat it because what else are we going to do, and yes there are many people who have their rice cookers, uh, to cook there, but unfortunately, you can’t cook here and then many have already taken away their rice cookers”, says Eralis, a Venezuelan migrant.

Not all migrants have complained about the food and others are grateful to have to eat. The mayor has estimated that he will need 2 billion dollars to address the immigration crisis, funds that he hopes to obtain from the federal government.
