The LVZ readers’ social annual review for 2021

In 2021 there were many moving topics in Leipzig and the region. And while much of the debates revolved around virus variants, protective measures and restrictions in the second year of the pandemic, other of our posts sparked widespread discussions on social media.

As an annual review of the most important topics in the region, we have put together five of the most discussed articles on Facebook.

International ranking: Leipzig has the most beautiful train station

After becoming “Germany’s most beautiful train station” in 2020, Leipzig Central Station has now taken it one step further: an international consumer protection organization named it the best in Europe among 50 competitors.

Full commitment in winter storms: handball players shovel snow

In February Leipzig sank in the snow. Local traffic was idle for a long time. Like many others, the Bundesliga handball players of the SC DHfK helped to clear the tracks from snow.

Is the “Blue Wonder” returning to Leipzig?

For Ur-Leipziger it was part of the cityscape, and its images are irretrievably linked to the Peaceful Revolution: The “Blue Wonder”, the foot and bike bridge over Goerdeler- and Tröndlinring, which was demolished in 2004, has made history. In January there was a petition to rebuild.

Debate about hairdresser closings in Leipzig

How should we go on? Many hairdressers in Leipzig asked themselves in February. Elija Muckenthaler, who runs two salons in the city, reported on the situation of his guild and nevertheless understood the closings.

Westin Hotel ends Ofarim investigation

The case caused an international stir. Was the singer Gil Ofarim insulted in an anti-Semitic way? A law firm specially commissioned by the accused Westin Hotel investigated the case and prepared a 118-page report. As a result, the accused employee cannot be blamed for anything. For the time being, however, he will not return to the Leipzig hotel.

LVZ readers are also active in our postings on Instagram. These two topics were discussed particularly hotly.

Should there be a ban on firecrackers on New Year’s Eve?

Bundestag election: AfD becomes the strongest force in Saxony

Should there be a real name requirement on Facebook?

Can Facebook oblige all users to use their real names for their profiles? This question reached the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) at the beginning of December. The highest civil judge in Karlsruhe negotiates the cases of two users who want to manage their account under a pseudonym.

In the terms of use of the network, under the point “Who can use Facebook” it says: “When people stand behind their opinions and actions, our community is safer and can be held more accountable. Because of this, you need to do the following: Use the same name that you use in everyday life. ”Other platform rules follow.

The two plaintiffs, a man and a woman, had used fictional names. Facebook initially unsuccessfully asked her to change her name and eventually blocked her accounts in 2018.

The network relies on the real name requirement in order to increase the inhibition threshold for insults, bullying and hate speech. The users could thus be made more responsible.

How do we moderate on Facebook and Instagram?

Note on our own behalf: We do our best to ensure high standards in our Facebook comments through targeted moderation. We delete insults, hate speech, fake news and irrelevant posts. If individual users are absolutely resistant to a certain level in the debate and seem too happy to forget their nursery, then we block them.

It should be noted, however, that Facebook does not offer a “filter” for comments: Everything that users write is directly online – without our being able to check it. We then work our way through the new comments, but we can always delete, hide or block them afterwards.

If you see something on our Facebook page that you think should be deleted, feel free to write us a private message. Then we will sift through the corresponding article again separately (gladly with precise information on how the comment can be found). We ask for your understanding if sometimes an answer does not come immediately: We read through thousands of comments every day so that the exchange in the community can take place as objectively and constructively as possible.
