This is a warning on the packaging of cigarette packs. In accordance with the Tobacco Business Act, all cigarette packs sold in Korea are clearly marked with warnings about diseases that tobacco can cause. Smokers face this warning several times a day.

If you watch it often, you might be indifferent, but the warning that it can cause sexual dysfunction chills the heart of male smokers every time they see it. This is because the size, thickness, and function of the penis are topics that all men have thought about at least once.

Studies have shown that smoking is a strong risk factor for erectile dysfunction. This is because the nicotine and carbon monoxide contained in cigarettes constrict blood vessels and interfere with the smooth circulation of blood. Since the process of erection of the corpus cavernosum occurs with the inflow of blood, this property of tobacco is fatal to erection.

Tobacco doesn’t just affect the erection of the penis. Smoking can also change shape. This is called ‘penile curvature’. The penis is curved, often prominent during erection.

Penile curvature, also called Peyronie’s disease, after the patient who first reported the disease. Since the shape of the penis varies from person to person, it is not a cause for concern if the penis is slightly curved or curved, but if the symptoms are severe, it may cause pain during erection or difficulty in insertion during intercourse.

Peyronie’s disease may occur in people with congenital fibrotic tissue in part of the penis, but smoking greatly increases the risk of acquired Peyronie’s disease. Min Kwon-shik, a professor of urology at Busan Paik Hospital, warned, “Smokers have a seven-fold increased risk of Peyronie’s disease.”

This is also due to the vasoconstrictor effect of nicotine. When the nicotine narrows blood vessels in a specific direction, they bend in one direction. According to the Mayo Clinic, Peyronie’s disease rarely goes away on its own and gets worse if left untreated. Therefore, it is necessary to consult and treat a specialist in urology.

Professor Min says quitting smoking for young people can provide immediate help. He advised, “Lifelong smokers cannot reverse the deformation of blood vessels, but in the case of people in their 20s and 30s, smoking cessation can improve Peyronie’s disease.”

In addition, Peyronie’s disease can be treated by taking oral medications such as potassium aminobenzoate or vitamin E or by injecting hormones. In severe cases, the penis may be reshaped through surgery.
