The Life and Legacy of Amsterdam Rapper Broertje: A Tribute to His Music Career

The Amsterdam rapper Broertje has died. Several reliable sources report this on social media. Broertje (real name Jonathan Xerxes Nepomuceno) became known as a member of rap and street collective Green Gang from Amsterdam-Zuidoost.

It is still unclear how he died. According to unconfirmed sources, he died after an illness. There are also rumors of cardiac arrest due to frequent nitrous oxide use.

Music

Since his teenage years, Broertje has been part of the rap and street gang Green Gang, with whom he released several albums. In 2009 he appeared together with rapper JayJay (now better known as Djaga Djaga) in a much-watched freestyle car session.

Broertje was signed to the OJFAM Entertainment label of founder Oshadix Leonora, the younger brother of Djaga Djaga.

Detention

From 2012, Broertje served a prison sentence of almost six years for attempted manslaughter of several people and theft with violence. He was initially supposed to get a ten-year prison sentence, but this was reduced. He recorded the lyrics to his EP in prison with a smartphone he smuggled in Straight Outta Prison which came out at the end of 2016. Broertje was released in 2017.

Solo album

He then released two solo albums: Ice cold in 2019 (with guest contributions from JoeyAK, Emms and Josylvio, among others) and Jamina in 2021, a tribute to his 24-year-old sister who died in 2014 after a serious assault by her boyfriend. The perpetrator received seven years in prison and TBS.

Rapper Broertje was seen in one last week episode from Red Bull Rap Champs. He also released the video clip a few days ago Soil released together with rapper Mello.

Brother was the father of a daughter.

There are many reactions on social media to Broertje’s death. Dutch rap legend Extince writes on Instagram: ‘RIP Broertje. We met in 2011. Respect and strength to the relatives’.

‘Rest in peace Brother! Enjoyed your music from the greengang sessions to tracks like De Bijlmer’, writes someone else. With his latest video clip, another writes: ‘Never be forgotten Baby brother! So I’ll pop all your pokkoes this week and this will be the last song. Rest in peace gap!’
