Hollywood legend actor Kirk Douglas died on Wednesday at 103 years old, his family said in a statement published by various media.

“With tremendous sadness, my brothers and I announced that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” said one of his sons, also actor Michael Douglas, in a statement on Facebook.

“For the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies, someone whose commitment to justice and the causes in which he believed set a standard to which we all aspire. But for me and for my brothers Joel and Peter , he was just dad, for Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, for his grandchildren and great-grandson, his loving grandfather, and for his wife Anne, a wonderful husband, “the statement said.

A legend of Hollywood
Kirk Douglas was born in New York in 1916 and is known for his participation in Hollywood’s ‘Golden Age’ movies.

He embodied roles that marked the history of cinema in films such as ‘Spartacus’, ‘Champion’ ( The mud idol, in Spanish) ‘, ‘The Bad and the Beautiful’ ‘(Captives of evil, in Spanish) or ‘Gunfight’ (The great duel).

He worked in more than 80 films and received three Academy Award nominations in six decades of career but the statuette only came in 1996, when he received the honorary Oscar.

As his health prevented him from returning to the recording, along with his now widow, Anne Buydens, they turned to philanthropic activities expressing his intention to donate most of his fortune to charities when they both died.

The couple rebuilt 400 schoolyards in Los Angeles and was responsible for the construction of “Harry’s Haven,” the Alzheimer unit named after Kirk’s dad at the Home of the Film and Television Fund in Woodland Hills, California.

The actor suffered a stroke in 1996, but was in good health since then.
